friday field trip (from the sketchbook).

november 2009
berkeley, california

i grew up in a chinese restaurant and there was always a giant tin of fortune cookies there. this shape is so familiar and comforting to me. and i loved the idea of the hidden message inside. like secret words from far beyond that would somehow make your life better.

a fortune + a cookie = the perfect food

Years ago I made some ceramic fortune cookies and put them in a bowl on my coffee table. One evening a friend and I watched her husband pick up a cookie and try to break it in two. When he couldn't break it, he put the whole thing in his mouth. She stopped him before he bit it and we got a good laugh out of it. I wasn't trying to be a wise guy, it didn't occur to me that anyone would think the cookies were real.
