happy mama's day.

i just finished making this quilt for my mom using some of my  dad's shirts (he passed away earlier this year).  though i'm not quite sure how she will take it. maybe it will make her sad, or perhaps it will bring her comfort (hopefully the latter). but for me, it was a very medicinal experience making it . . . . and hopefully it will be mine some day !

yesterday i had lunch with one of my all time favorite people, jeanine payer, and her 5.5 month old latest and greatest creation, WILLIAM !!! what a little golden nugget !  he is the cutest and calmest baby ever. perhaps it is all the poetry she read to him in gestation? she makes juggling a jewelry empire and mothering a child seem SO simple.

the first and last bracelets are my favorite jeanine payers' that i wear EVERY single day !

. . . GLAZE !!!!!!!!!  our kilns are fired up and we are glazing like little maniacs here at the studio.  if only there were 8 more hours in the day,  for the potter's job is NEVER DONE !!!!

a bad fit.

i've had a lot of requests for covered salt cellars, but am having a BIG FIT over them.  failure after failure . . . EVERY single one.  the cracking, the bad fitting lids, and the always dreaded "oxides jumping out of the imprinted lettering." i'm hoping to get it right,  someday soon.  the good news is that instead of dumping these into the ocean, which i SO want to do, they will be on super sale at our SUPER seconds sale at fourth & clay on may 3rd + 4th.  seconds on fourth is a BIG EVENT featuring  josie, diana, whitney,  me + 2 fantastic textile artists.  items will be up to 75% off !!!!  check back soon for more details.

today rebecca and i went to the very grand alameda flea market.  i'm always drawn to the box of ceramic doll heads.  they are so scary, beautiful, and morbid all at the same time.

diablo magazine.

i was one of the lucky potters to be featured in the april issue of diablo magazine.  the article is about the incredibly happening clay scene going on in west berkeley, california.  the areas around 4th and 5th streets are virtually saturated with fantastic ceramic artists . . . and by the way, we aren't ALL birkenstock-wearing-hippies, either !  to read the article, click HERE.

who needs serifs ? i know i don't.  i'm going without for now because  less is more.  i think it's a cleaner and simpler look for the spring !   everyone, LOSE your SERIFS !  you can get some of these new sans serif rocks right here.

yesterday my friend april higashi paid me a studio visit and then we went to lunch at the ever delicious vik's indian restaurant (which is 2 blocks from my studio).  if you've never been there before, you just don't know what you are missing !!! it's worth a visit to my studio JUST to be able to hop over for a quick and tasty meal.  april and i worked in design for esprit de corps about a million years ago, and now she is a very fancy jewelry designer and i play with mud.  her studio/gallery is in berkeley quite near to mine.  check her out  when you're checking me out !

spring forward.

are these not the most beautiful things you've seen all day ?  they are growing in our new "back yard."  did i mention that i am FINALLY moved into our new townhouse in emeryville ?  i feel like i have a new lease on life.  don't get me wrong, i love san francisco, but after 20 years there, i am ready for a more peaceful, calm, clean, and easy existence.  and what's not to love ?  we are 2 minutes away from the water where miss wilma frolics everyday, i can hop on my bike for some fresh morning air and exercise withOUT having to fight the city traffic, smells and danger,  people are actually neighborly, the weather is exquisite, i am 5 minutes from my studio, and i can be back in the city in 10 minutes if there is no traffic.

people who think that emeryville is all about ikea  are wrong.  we are on the other side of the tracks where we can't even see it . . . . unless we want to . . . . and believe me, sometimes we do !

in the beginning.

these are the very first bowls that i ever made, 15 years ago.  my work hasn't really changed all that much from then to now . . .  and i'm not exactly sure WHAT that implies ?!  all i know is that i could never achieve that refined perfection in my work . . . that glossy finish that only potter's potters have. i suppose my work simply reflects  my personality AND  my fred flintstone way of life . . . . W I L M A !!!!!!!

easy bake oven.

while waiting to get our kilns hooked up at the new studio, i have been depending on my test kiln (a.k.a. the easy bake oven) which has been a complete life saver . . .


. . . i can actually fit 8 of my pourers in this handy little contraption !

something's fishy . . .

way back in 1994, i spent a month down in baja surfing and eating the tastiest fish tacos you could ever imagine at this little shack called pilar's.


and TODAY, i had lunch with basak , and ate THESE fish tacos that just might give pilar a run for her pesos !

so sweet !

i actually don't really even HAVE a sweet tooth, but my sweet friend, marty, sent me these amazing moravian sugar cookies that are unbelievably delicious. they look so plain and so simple, but they acutally burst with flavor and have the perfect "crunch". it's like in italy, when you are served the most bland looking pasta which turns out to be the most exquisite and flavorful meal EVER (how do they DO that ?).

these cookies come in a handsome red tin that contain about a billion cookies. i highly suggest ordering a tin . . . or three !

a grand weekend indeed . . .

after devouring a delicious breakfast concocted by the ever wonderful JW, i was ready to roll up my sleeves and move into my . . .

NEW STUDIO that i am so so so so VERY excited about ! it is located in berkeley on 4th + channing and is called fourth & clay. this is a brand new beautiful clay studio/gallery brought to life by the amazing and talented josie jurczenia. the space is SO spacious with ceilings that are SO high. it is the working studio of josie, me, and one more clay guru who i can't mention the name of YET, but you will all know who she is and will shout with joy when she moves in ! there is a gallery in front and we will be open on the first saturday of each month from 11-5 AND whenever we are there working in the studio (which will be a LOT). you can also call or EMAIL ME for an appointment.

new beginnings.

sadly, my dad passed away on sunday, january 13th, after 22 days in the hospital with pneumonia, a staph infection, and a host of other complications. thankfully, he died very peacefully and it was actually an incredibly poignant and magical ending. i feel so grateful to have been with him for his very last breath. i learned so much about life throughout this entire experience.

he was truly an amazing man and father. i will miss him everyday.

and so we both begin again . . . life will be different for the both of us now, but the possibilities are endless.

i made wedding favor rocks for viola + phillip's "to kill a mockingbird" themed wedding. they put them in these little nests on each place setting . . . how very sweet they look nestled in their nests (they actually look like eggs) !

taste, dine and feast . . .

. . . . is EXACTLY what we did on this delicious concoction of raw tuna, avocado, daikon sprouts, cucumber and seaweed . . . on a bed of brown rice. this is my idea of a perfect meal.

get down to business...

last night i attended the biz lady meet up event that the amazing grace of design sponge put on. it was nice to finally put faces to some of the people i know only thru cyber space. there was a plethora of info given to the packed room of eager entrepreneurs. great advice about how to start up a business......what to do.....what NOT to do.........but somehow, it left me feeling a little bit ashamed about my own business........

for i didn't follow ANY of these rules. business plan ? what is THAT ? budget?.......huh ? goals ?.......what, are we playing soccer ? suffice to say, i didn't plan my business....it just sort of happened while i wasn't looking. and ignorance IS bliss. isn't it ?

p.s....i don't expect to be asked to speak at the next biz lady meeting !!!

p.s.s...i'm STILL not following the rules !!!
