another smashing start.

READY . . .

AIM . . .

FIRE !!

our clay posse has a news year's tradition of throwing and destroying our unwanted bodies of work that pile up throughout the year. last year we dropped them out of a 2 story building, and this year we threw them against the outside of our studio wall. what a cathartic and relieving feeling it is. with each toss letting go of negative and dead energy and making room for new and fresh creativity.

i always like to save one shard from everyone as a symbolic remembrance for that year . . .
but bye-bye 2009 . . . and hel-LO 2010.

see video HERE and HERE.

nothing better than smashing old/obsolete work

I love that you do this as a way to bring in the new year... by throwing out the OLD - and SMASHING it to PIECES!

You may have started something by coming up with new ways to destroy the pieces. What will it be next year?

It reminds me of how hotels find new and crazy ways to destroy the keys to the front door of their properties during their grand openings.

Just avoid dynamite! :-)

Your blog is both lovely and inspiring. It is one of my favorite places to visit.

Please know that we are out here reading your words and we appreciate what you do.

Just so you know..

I am a quilter and knitter, but would love to come up with a symbolic way to get rid of the things that didn't work that was a cathartic as throwing and listening to pottery break. Heartbreaking and freeing all at the same time.

BTW Rae, I bought one of your nests and eggs as a gift for a friend at the Renegade Craft Fair and my friend loved it! Hooray for wonderful gifts made by such a talented artist.

diane . . . . what about setting fire to the fabrics/yarns and listening to them sizzle into ash ?! sending smoke signals into the sky freeing the faulty work and hoping they are re-born as WINNERS ?!?!?!

Perhaps next year should involve hammers - and protective eye wear, of course!
