i'm working with this beautiful spanish black clay and getting back to my roots in coil building. oh, what joy. it's like going home. this clay is perfect . . . groggy, wet, not too wet, easy to manipulate, and dries relatively fast. it's a dream clay.

The black clay looks luscious; can it be combined in a piece with the delicious white porcelain clay, or do they fire differently ?

not sure, lyn. i know the porcelain shrinks MORE than the black clay and i did mix them on a few pieces. will know the results in a few days (cross fingers and stay tuned).
Does it fire black? I remember we had black clay in Italy that fired buff..it was very strange.
josie, it fires pretty black, depending on what temp you fire it at. i want it to be a dark dark chocolate delicious brown color. it's definitely NOT like the faux black italian clay. what a RIP off. for all that mess, it should STAY dark.

hi rae! i'm a student in a ceramic materials class learning to formulate my own clay bodies and glazes. i would like to make a black clay, but i am finding that most of the recipes call for manganese which is toxic to absorb through the skin, requiring me to wear gloves at all times. do you know what this clay you used in france was composed of? did you have to wear gloves when working with it? and do you know of any place stateside to get black clay that fires as beautifully as this one? thanks so much for your help! i love your work!
hi arielle. this clay i used in france fired more brown than black and i LOVED it. yes, manganese is VERY BAD and is in most black clays so you really have to be careful when using.
the blackest clay i have found here in the states is called CASSIUS BASALTIC. it's lovely but there is manganese in it !
